'It's still sinking in'

OLYMPIC swimming sensation David Davies was at the Audi garage in Cardiff yesterday, casting his eye over the latest models in the range.

Audi, who sponsor David, have moved him on to their VIP list and have offered him a new car every six months for the rest of his life, following his Olympic success.

David said: "What I've achieved is still sinking in, really. I've not even had a chance to sit down and watch the race again on the television. The past few months have been the best of my life."

David Davies claimed his place among Britain's sporting greats by taking bronze in the men's 1,500m freestyle at the Athens Olympics.

The 19-year-old broke the European record and smashed his personal best by 11 seconds.

David pushed Australian swimming legend Grant Hackett all the way. Hackett, unbeaten at 1,500m for seven years, had to produce an Olympic record-breaking performance to take gold.

When on the podium to receive his Olympic medal last week, David did the Cardiff City move 'the ayatollah'. David explained: "I follow Cardiff City and many of my mates are diehard Cardiff fans. They wanted me to give an ayatollah on the podium."

His coach, David Haller, said: "He's still got a lot of developing to do. He's certainly not a finished product. By the Commonwealth Games in 2006, he will be formidable and by Beijing, he'll be the real deal."
