Inspiring

It warmed the cockles of an old man's heart to see one of our own storming through the Olympics to bring home a medal.

Everyone complains about the youth of today being lazy and unproductive at best, destructive and loutish at worst.

But David Davies proved to be the exception - and the calm swimmer who stood on that podium was an inspiration to us all.

As for the other British athletes in Team GB, they all did very well. People are still moaning about poor Paula Radcliff, but I'd like to see anyone run over 20 miles in baking, sweaty heat. I think she was very brave to stop and face the music.

So many of us were willing to wash out the efforts made by our supremely fit young men and women in the games'. That's not really fair. They give up many little luxuries most of us take for granted. I bet they long to sit down with a greasy fry-up once in a while.

Returning to the topic of David Davies, he seems the epitome of all that's right with our world.

Perhaps when it comes to our youths, the majority of whom aren't as the tar brush would suggest, we should all take David's advice, and "chill out".

Mr Jones,

Barry Road.
