EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of September 2, 1954:

After three tugs had failed to tow her off the shore at Pleasant Harbour, Aberthaw, on the morning tide, the 500 ton steamer Plassy at last got clear of the beach on Tuesday night, and made for Cardiff under her own steam.

As in former years, the RAF St Athan is among 55 airfields which will be "At Home" to the public on Saturday, September 18, to mark the 14th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

The strange thing which has appeared in the sky over Barry recently now appears to have moved to Pontypridd where it was described by an eye witness as a "cigar shaped object with an orange glow."

At the Bonvilston Sheep Dog Trials held at Llantrithyd Farm, Bonvilston on Saturday, Rob owned by Lyn William, Llancarfan, and Glen owned by Mr H Greenslade, Cwmcarn, tied by dropping only one point each out of a possible 5.5.

Twenty-year-old Mark Hamilton-Jones has passed the final professional examination of the Hotel and Catering Institute Management Association.

Gale force winds at Rhoose on Monday robbed a young mother of her bank deposit as she stepped from her car to go into the National Westminster Bank.

Carolyn Davies, of Wesley Avenue, Rhoose has won a weekly heat of the "Miss Pontin" beauty contest.

Bruce Gaitskell has been appointed manager of a new branch opened on Monday in Barry by the Leicester Building Society - one of the league leaders with assets of more than £1,300m.

Among recent graduates at the University of Warwick was well known former Barry estate agent D G Zane Morris.
