University here we come

BARRY A-level students were jumping for joy when they opened their results last Thursday.

A rise of half a percent on the national results from last year means a 22-year on year rise in A-level passes across the country.

Head girl of Barry Comprehensive sixth form, Elizabeth Baudette, aged 18, of Romilly Road, passed her A-levels. She obtained a grade A in film studies, A in English and C in psychology and will go to Kings College to read American studies.

She said: "I still need another grade to be good from the Bryn Haffryn School to go to university. (Elizabeth found out later that day that she had obtained another grade A).

"I am studying American studies because my mum is from the USA. I love the country. San Francisco is my preferred place for my year abroad."

Barry Comprehensive head boy, John Moore, also 18, of Barry Island also passed the exams he needed for university.

He obtained a grade A and two Bs to get into Cardiff University to read law and politics.

John, said: "I think I have done quite well to get what I have. It was terrible waiting to find out what I obtained in my A-levels."

Ben and Mike Sewell have been heavily involved in school performances. They have both gained an unconditional offer to study acting at Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts.

Peter Keegan will embark on a fine arts degree course at Cardiff University. He said: "I am looking forward to going to university. I can't wait to get there.

"In the future I want to be a full time artist. I have already sold paintings to people at school and have painted a portrait of the headmaster here."

Barry Comprehensive sixth form pupils and staff were delighted with the continued success of their pupils.

Hard work pays off to achieve excellent results

BRYN HAFREN students were ready and waiting at the door to collect their results and the vast majority were not disappointed with their achievements.

The sixth form at Bryn Hafren is combined with Barry Comprehensive's upper years.

Bryn Hafren School is on a high as the majority of students gained the grades they needed to start the next phase of their lives.

New headmaster Phil Whitcombe said: "The results are excellent this year. It is a time for students to go on to the next stage of their career or studying. Whatever grades they achieved they are hopefully the key to opening doors to their next challenge in life."

Student Becky Holmes, of Clifton Street, achieved three As at A-level in art, design and technology and Welsh. She will doing an art foundation course at Barry College.

She said: "I am not quite sure what I want to do in the future. I am thinking of becoming an interior designer and going to read that subject at university."

Amy Case gained two A grades and a B, Kathryn Jones was awarded two As and a C, and Cheryl Tracy achieved two A grades and a C.

Head of the sixth form, Mair Ebenezer, said: "Many of the students are continuing their education at university and all that have applied to go on to higher education have been successful in securing their places.

"We are delighted with the continued success and excellent standard of this year's A-level results, with many students achieving top grades. Once again the hard work and commitment of the students has paid off."
