50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of August 26, 1954:

A schoolboy's find may have solved a mystery puzzling inhabitants locally and down the Vale. It is thought that the object is a form of balloon projected for weather study, which provides a much more practical solution to the mystery than the "flying saucer" theories.

Back home after nearly four years in Tasmania is Ronald Lethby, son of Mr and Mrs W Lethby of Barry Road, Barry. During his stay he worked in the area of Hobart.

Twenty-one-year-old Joy Slape, a tall and slender brunette, who is the only daughter of Mr and Mrs Hadley Slape, of Court Road, Barry, took part in a programme which marked the opening of the Radio and Television Show at Earls Court, London.

A rink from the Barry Ladies Bowling Club, comprising C Jickells, F Horsey, S Baylis and W Heathfield (skip) reached the semi-final of the Glamorgan County Championships.

25 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of August 30, 1979:

Two Barry police officers have recently been promoted and will be transferred to Cardiff station next month.

Police Sergeant Wynne Lewis has been promoted to inspector and will be transferred to Canton on September 17. Sgt Lewis is married with two children and lives in Barry.

The film The Great Escape was reaching its climax on BBC1 on Monday when there was a fault in the underground supply cable shut of electricity supplies in the Kingsland Crescent area of Barry.

On August 3, there were 244 unfilled vacancies at the Barry Job Centre and Llantwit Major Employment Office.

A sight not to be missed on August bank holiday (Monday) at Barry Island were 7,213 people dancing the conga in an attempt to beat the world record.
