50 YEARS AGO EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of August 5, 1954:

Sunshine Corner at Barry Island opened on Bank Holiday afternoon when a large crowd of children and adults from all parts of the country immediately gathered.

Coal exports from Barry Docks last week were 25,114 tons compared with 36,369 tons in the corresponding week of 1953.

A crowd of Caerphilly miners and their families on holiday at Barry climbed happily on board a motor coach for a mystery trip. An hour later the mystery was solved - the coach rolled into Caerphilly.

The Barry Children's Choir, with 154 marks, was awarded third place in the second children's choir under-16 class at the National Eisteddfod at Ystradgynlais on Tuesday.

The Borough of Barry Horse and Flower Show, on which a heavy loss was sustained last year owing to inclement weather, opened yesterday (Wednesday) morning in dull but warm weather.

25 YEARS AGO EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of August 9, 1979:

The sum of £640 was raised from the recent house-to-house collection in aid of cancer research by the Barry Tenovus Cancer Committee.

A 12.5lb can of contaminated ham described as "extremely dangerous if eaten," has been traced by Barry Police after it went missing when it fell out of a car.

Greater interest and co-operation locally would make for a better health service and co-operation is needed, not supposition. This statement came from H W Durman, chairman of the No 5 Branch OAP.

Government restrictions on spending have forced the Vale of Glamorgan Borough Council to make a five percent cutback on expenditure and council house rents and charges for services may have to rise.

Barry county councillor Ron Boon presented a cheque, on behalf of the Sports Council for Wales to A F Ireland, chairman of the Barry Harriers Athletic Club.
