50 YEARS AGO EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of May 6, 1954:

J W Kelly, manager of the Romilly Cinema, has announced that Old Age Pensioners will be allowed, subject to certain conditions, admission to any seat on the ground floor for a shilling.

With 43 points from 42 games Barry Town have finished seventh in the Southern League Table, while 39 points from 38 games have enabled them to reach tenth position in the Welsh League.

At the Borough Water Engineer's Office presentations were made to T D J Hughes, Technical Assistant, by the staff and workmen of the department and on behalf of the Barry Branch of NALGO on the occasion of Mr Hughes leaving the service of the Barry Corporation.

Sixteen cases of whooping cough were included in the 38 cases of infectious diseases reports for the month to members of the Borough Health Committee.

A vote of thanks to the retiring chairman of the Barry Chamber of Trade and Commerce, George C Cooper, was proposed at a meeting of the Town Development Committee. 25 YEARS AGO EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of May 10, 1979:

Fifteen pretty girls paraded before a panel of judges on Saturday at Rhoose Community Hall in the hope of being selected Carnival Queen for 1979. The winner was 16-year-old Karen Cooper of Rhoose Road.

The Barry Town Mayor, Cllr Allan Maidment, was the guest speaker at the Cadoxton Darby and Joan Club on Tuesday week.

On Tuesday April 24, Court St David No 211, of the Independent Order of Foresters, held their annual Spring dance at the Electricity Club Pontcanna, Cardiff. During the evening Tracy Silva of Penarth, was elected Court St David's Miss Personality Queen for 1979/80.

Barry's MP Sir Raymond Gower made his eighth successful defence of his parliamentary seat, which he has held since 1951, at last week's general election.
