50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of July 22, 1954:

A traffic census is to be taken at Gladstone Road, west of the junction with Court Road, and at the South side of Harbour Road.

The Wales v Ireland water polo match at the Knap Pool on Saturday afternoon is to be broadcast in its entirety on the Welsh Home Service.

The second edition of the Municipal Tenants Handbook issued by the Mayor and Corporation for the guidance and information of all tenants of Corporation estates of the Borough of Barry, has just been received.

Householders in the Coldbrook area, particularly tenants of the pre-fab bungalows, were complaining about the enormous number of flies which were causing a nuisance in that area, said Cllr C T Price to the Health Committee on Tuesday.

Freda Anne Meekison, elder daughter of Mrs Meekison of Dudley Place, Barry, and the late Mr F J Meekison, has obtained an Honours Degree, Class Div 2, in Science, at Cardiff University.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of July 26, 1979:

Concorde pilot John Cochrane's decision to accept an invitation to test the instrument landing approach - an aid to pilots in bad weather - at Cardiff (Wales) Airport on Tuesday afternoon, gave many people in Barry their closest view of the supersonic aircraft.

Former Barry Town soccer player Mike Cosslett, who was given a free transfer at the end of last season by Newport County, has signed for Weymouth, who, next season, will be playing in the new Football Alliance.

Modernisation work in some Barry council homes is taking, in some cases, three times longer than expected and one tenant has suffered the disturbance of workmen for seven months and is still waiting for work to be completed.
