50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of August 12, 1954:

The decision of the Barry Town Council to refuse an offer from a Cardiff furnishing firm to engage the Memorial Hall for an exhibition at a cost of £90 weekly, has caused an irate reader to send a letter of protest.

To prove that you can't keep a good woman down, Mrs L A Mills, of Gaen Street, Barry, who is now in her 82nd year, went on a flight by Cambrian Air Services plane from Rhoose Airport.

Ten children between eight and 14 years of age, some of whom had never had a holiday before or seen the sea, arrived at Barry Station on Thursday to start a 14 days at the seaside.

Barrie Davies, son of Mr and Mrs James Nicholas Davies, with who he had been staying on holiday at their home on the Parade since a week Saturday, will be returning on Sunday to his post with the United Nations Statistical Office at Geneva.

25 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of August 16, 1979:

At a special ceremony at the Barry Leisure Centre Complex, Broad Street, on Thursday, a sealed container was buried in the foundations of the building by the Vale Mayor, Cllr A Lloyd.

Three Barrians have been successful in recent competitions run at Pontin's holiday camps. They were, Robert William Lane of Pencoedtre Road, Carol Jones of Kennedy Rise, and 15-year-old Angela Reoves.

The 6th Barry Venture Scout Unit are making an attempt to walk Offa's Dike. They will be leaving Barry on Saturday.

A Barry born opera singer, Sylvia Rhys-Thomas, who has achieved worldwide renown, was received by the Mayor of the Vale on a recent visit to her home town.

The National championships for the Albacore Class were held recently in Torbay, and Barry Yacht Club was represented by Justin Taylor. Sailing took place all through the week and Justin did very well to finish the week in 10th place.
