'Don't mention the asbestos'

A BARRY woman who was given dangerous advice on asbestos disposal has received an apology from the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

And it's all thanks to the joint efforts of Vale of Glamorgan MP John Smith and the Barry & District News.

Diane Dutton rang the local authority for advice after taking the lethal material from the ceiling of her Barry Road home.

The reply was so shocking she contacted Vale MP John Smith ,who condemned it - and called the News.

Mr Smith said: "Diane was told she should hire a van to take it away, but she should not mention the asbestos to them.

"I was so shocked at this that a member of my staff phoned up as well, and sure enough we were given the same advice. It's totally irresponsible."

Mr Smith added: "Cardiff and Rhondda Cynon Taff councils provide a free asbestos pick up service. The Vale does not.

"I am shocked the council does not take a more pro-active position in dealing with asbestos."

A Vale of Glamorgan Council spokesman said: "An employee did provide advice on the transportation of asbestos sheets that was incorrect and contrary to the council's position in such circumstances.

"We have extended our sincerest apologies to the resident concerned.

"Appropriate action has now been taken and measures introduced to ensure there is no recurrence of such a situation.

"The council currently operates a free collection service for bulky households items but has no plans to introduce a similar type of service for building materials such as asbestos.

"We encourage commercial building specialist to undertake this work, and any changes to our current service would place an additional burden on the taxpayer."

After intervention from the MP and the News, the authority removed the sheets safely from Ms Dutton's home.
