Fete success for Friends

THE ANNUAL Friends of Barry Hospital fete was a huge success this year.

The threat of heavy rain looked as though it would wash away most of the stalls, but the League of Friends refused to let it beat them.

And just before the fete opened, the outburst stopped and the sun shone for the whole of Saturday afternoon.

Barry weatherman Derek Brockway didn't need the microphone, which had been put inside the hospital to protect it from the damp, and gathered the thronging crowd around him to declare the event officially opened.

Assembly Member Jane Hutt and John Smith MP arrived at the yearly fete to lend their support, and Derek Brockway was a hit with the visitors, staying right until the end.

There were more stalls promoting local organisations and selling goods to the public than ever before as well as a teddy bear's picnic.

Secretary of the League of Friends, Gay Fifield was thrilled with the turn out.

She said: "So many people braved the rain to show us their support and early indications are that we have raised £4,000 for the hospital, which is fantastic."

Barry and District News photographer Glyn Paul was on hand to capture a few memories of the day.
