EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of July 29, 1954:
A girl who means to get to the top of her profession is Beryl Brown, daughter of Mr and Mrs W J Brown of Kathleen Street. Miss Brown who is entitled to add the letters SRCN, SRN and BONC after her name surpassed her previous examination performance when she gained first place in the British Orthopaedic Finals.
A new Magistrate is Ruth May James, of Nantgoch, Trethomas, who belongs to a well-known Barry family, being the youngest daughter of the late Mr A Davey, builder, of Treharne Road, Cadoxton, and Mrs Davey who still lives at the home of her son Adolphous Davey, at Pencoedtre, Cadoxton.
The Barry Borough Council is advocating that the lighting of beacons at zebra crossings should be confined to the hours of darkness for economy reasons.
At the recent examinations of the Royal Schools of Music, the following pupils were successful in pianoforte: Grade 2, Clive Clarke; Grade 3, Dianne Williams and Derek Francis. They are pupils of Bertha Worrall LRAM, ARCM.

Barry Athletic's Welsh International bowler Russell Evans is one of five men who will represent Wales in the World Bowls Championships in Australia in January.
On July 5, there were 258 unfilled vacancies at the Barry Job Centre and Llantwit Major Employment Office.
The South Glamorgan County Council's Environment and Planning (Traffic) Sub Committee have accepted the need for improved pedestrian facilities at Littlemoors Hill, Barry, but because of spending cuts cannot proceed with an improvements programme.
The Vale of Glamorgan Borough Council are to resist the proposal to list the Town Hall as a building or architectural or historical interest and has accused the Barry Town Council of discourtesy in not approaching them before the Welsh Office.
At the request of H W Durham, chairman of Barry No 5 Branch OAP, Barry's MP Sir Raymond Gower has renewed his appeals to the South Glamorgan Health Authority to implement their promise of an early opening of a minor casualty unit at Barry.
