DVD Review: Mona Lisa Smile

YOU MIGHT be forgiven if you glanced quickly at a synopsis of Mona Lisa Smile and saw the Dead Poet's Society - but with women instead.

It is about inspirational art teacher Katherine Ann Watson (Julia Roberts) who has to outsmart an impressively intelligent class of up-and-coming society girls.

Confident she has the leaders of tomorrow in her classroom, Katherine is horrified when she realises that the exclusive Wellesley College is basically a finishing school in disguise.

The film is set at the end of the 1950s, on the brink of the sexual revolution, and women like Katherine Ann Watson were all set to break the mold.

There are no stick-in-the-mud morals shoved down your throat, and there are some truly emotional moments thanks to the sure-footed talents of Kirsten Dunst and her co-stars.
