50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of July 15, 1954:

At the Welsh Secondary School championships at Cwmbran on Saturday, Cadoxton Secondary Boys' School continued to hit the highlights. C Richards in the middle group (15 to 17 years) gave an impeccable display of speed and style in the mile walk.

Ivor Percival Thomas, 16-year-old son of Mr and Mrs Ivor Thomas, of Claude Road, Barry, was presented with the Queen's Medal at the annual distribution of prizes of Smith's Nautical School, Cardiff, at the Technical College Cardiff, on Wednesday.

A party of 32 boys and four teachers from the Cadoxton Secondary Boys' School left on Monday for a week's holiday in North Wales.

Welshmen called to the Middle Temple last week included G Ewan Janner, only son of Barnett Janner, MP for Leicester, a solicitor who is an old boy of the Barry Grammar School.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of July 19, 1979:

Barry Town Council has asked the Vale council for further information on residential development plans submitted in respect of Glan-y-Mor, the YMCA building at Maes-y-Coed, The Knap.

Barry has been left with just one lifeboat after the reserve boat Susan Ashley left the town for the last time on Wednesday week.

Barry Town Council is to look again at the possibility of building a crematorium in Barry, following the failure of the scheme to convert the existing chapel at the Merthyr Dyfan burial ground.

A £3m development in the centre of Barry, which would include a new library and multi-storey car park, is envisaged by a London firm of developers.

A party of 45 Danish Scouts and leaders arrived in Barry on Monday and will be staying in the area until Monday next, July 23.
