Double win keeps Sully on road to Lords

SULLY Centurions success story rolled on last weekend when the 1st XI visited Usk both on Saturday in the league and Sunday in the Welsh Cup and came away with a double triumph despite a weakened side.

Sully elected to bat on the superb Usk ground on Saturday, and found runs hard to come by on the slow wicket.

The loss of both Jamie and Ryan Sylvester was a blow but a magnificent 77 from Mike O'Shea, with excellent support from Lloyd Smith, and a fine 23 by evergreen Terry Williams before a last wicket stand between youngsters Owain Lovering and Gareth Sullivan, took the total to 182/9.

Ryan Sylvester and Nathan Gage ripped the heart out of the home side's batting, and only a fine 44 from Clayton saved them from real embarrassment as they were dismissed for 120.

Centurions 182/9. M O'Shea 77, T Williams 23, L Smith 21. K Khanna 3-17.

Usk 120 ao. I Clayton 44, M Taplin 22. N Gage 4-19, R Sylvester 3-21, L Smith 2-28.

In the cup on Sunday, skipper Jamie Sylvester and Mike O'Shea put Sully on top with a superb 64-run partnership, O'Shea out for 25 and Sylvester going one short of a deserved half-century.

After rain the game was reduced to 40 overs, and Newbold contributed a fine 42 to the total of 217/8.

Tamplin and Clayton added 94 for Usk's third wicket, but Jamie Sylvester took four wickets as Centurions won comfortably by 41 runs.

Their reward is a quarter-final place against local rivals St Fagans on Sunday, July 18.

Centurions 217/8, J Sylvester 49, M Newbold 42, L Smith 28, M O'Shea 25, N Gage 20.

Usk 176ao. M Tamplin 68, I Clayton 37. J Sylvester 4-37, R Sylvester 2-27, L Smith 2-39.

This Sunday is a historic day in the history of the club when they are at home in the National Village Cup with a prize of a quarter-final place, and only two games away from Lords. There will be a bar and barbecue and a big crowd is expected.
