THE SCOUTS and Guides' Annual Fete at Romilly Park on Saturday, July 3, was a massive success.
The sun shone for all the proceedings, and thousands of people turned out for an event praised by Assembly Member Jane Hutt as the embodiment of community spirit.
The opening proceedings were concluded with the Beavers doing the Beaver Slap and the Cubs performing their long established 'Grand Howl', led by the Sixers.
The main events then followed with the Devil's Horsemen, presented by Gerard Naprous, giving a dazzling performance of stunt riding in their Wild West Show.
Dante - the black horse which gave the brilliant display - was the actual horse used in the 'Black Horse' bank advert on television.
Ben Whitmarsh-Knight and Daniel Thomas then fought as giant Sumo wrestlers but the wind really proved the winner in these bouts.
The Brownies and Rainbows dressed in wonderfully colourful and original costumes (mostly designed and made by themselves, with a little help from mums and dads). They danced a birthday bonanza to the delight of the audience.
The Beavers dressed as clowns, in outfits they had made over a number of weeks at their meetings, and showed how imaginative and well motivated the sections are. Under the watchful eye of Michelle Phillips, the District Beaver liaison officer cunningly disguised as a jester herself, the beavers raced around the arena climbing through tunnels, and under nets, weaving between obstacles and into baths of balls etc, enjoyed by the Beavers and public alike.
The afternoon started with the Scouts and Guides of Barry being led into the arena by the Regimental Band of the Royal Welsh Regiment, and with the groups' flags leading in almost 1000 youngsters from the area.
The official opening was carried out by Jane Hutt. She spoke of the immensely impressive sight of so many youngsters and the lead it gave to Barry, and congratulated the Fete Committee for planning such a wonderful event for the town.
Keith Burfoot then presented on behalf of the Chief Scout, George Purvis, the Chief Scout Gold award, which is the highest award in the scouts section, to two members of the 11th Barry Sea Scout Group, Philip Ventrise and Michael Barnes.
Winners of the best decorated site, were the 5th Barry Sea Scout Group, and the winners of the best decorated stall were the 11th Barry Sea Scout Group.
The winners of the colouring competition for the younger sections, as judged by the members from the Barry District Scout Fellowship, were:
Beavers: 1st Sarah Owens 5th Barry; 2nd Laura Blake 2nd/4th Barry; 3rd Rhian Bamon 5th Barry.
Rainbows: 1st Targan Richards 10th Barry; 2nd Laura Young 1st Rhoose; 3rd Abi Such 10th Barry.
