James carries Olympic torch

HONOUR: Barry's James Savory with Colin Jackson.

A BARRY sportsman carried the Olympic Torch through the streets of London at the weekend as part of specially-chosen relay team.

James Savory, 21, was chosen to take part in the event because of his achievements in the Special Olympics, in particular as a gymnast.

Sir Roger Bannister began the 31-mile trip from Wimbledon's Centre Court on Saturday morning.

Tim Henman carried it around the All England Club before passing it to Virginia Wade, who won the Wimbledon women's singles crown in 1977.

Other well-known torchbearers during Saturday's run included Ian Botham, Frank Bruno, Sir Richard Branson and Mary Peters.

James Savory suffers from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, learning disabilities and has co-ordination problems.

He is currently in a residential college in North Wales learning life skills which could one day help him live an independent life.

Tim Wilkinson, a spokesman for Special Olympics GB sponsors Coca-Cola, said: "We were searching for individuals to be torch-bearers from Special Olympics GB who had gone the extra mile to make the programme a success - people who had enriched the lives of others by demonstrating dedication and inspiration.

"We are proud to say that James was chosen for this opportunity because he really embodied the Olympic spirit and was truly worthy of this fantastic opportunity.

"He is always ready to help the younger gymnasts to attain their full potential and they look up to James as to what they can achieve."

James has represented his school, college, clubs and Wales over the years in a variety of sports.

He regularly plays water-polo, basketball, football, badminton, tenpin bowling, swimming, skiing, athletics and gymnastics.

At the World Games in Dublin last year James won two gold, one silver and two bronze medals for Great Britain.

The relay, which saw the Olympic Torch touch British soil for the first time since 1948, will travel across six continents.

It arrived in the UK from Paris, and will now make its way to Athens for the Olympic opening ceremony on August 13.
