Centurions win again to keep on road to Lords

SULLY Centurions were beaten by the weather last Saturday when all three games were rained off.

Sunday arrived, the weather eased, and the tremendous efforts of Don Sylvester in drying out the wicket surrounded with the water meant the much-awaited sixth round of the National Village Cup against Pembrokeshire champions Lawrenny started on time.

The visitors were in confident mood and on winning the toss elected to bat on a green Sully wicket.

Just 31 overs later they must have wondered what hit them as a superb bowling display by Centurions sent them back to the Pavilion for 66.

Lawrenny started very slowly and after 13 overs, with Dave Eskins and Ryan Sylvester bowling an excellent line the visitors could not get going at all.

Nathan Gage had Harris caught by Ryan Sylvester for 11 in his first over. Terry Williams joined the attack and Centurions bowlers just blew away the visitors batting.

S Cole was lbw to Williams at 42 and without a run added Gage took two further wickets, bowling Phillips for 22 and trapping Lewis lbw for 0.

Jenkins was run out by skipper Jamie Sylvester then Gage bowled Williams for 1. Gage was on fire and Lawrenny were in disarray.

A Cole was bowled by Gage for 0 and at 54/7 the end was in sight as the score became 61/9 with Buckle lbw to Gage for 2 and the stubborn A Cole Snr bowled by the ever reliable Terry Williams.

Skipper Jamie Sylvester wrapped things up, trapping P Cole lbw for 0.

How the performance of Nathan Gage 6-13 was welcomed by all club members. Nathan has recovered from two operations on his shoulder this winter and this was a great confidence booster.

The total of 66 was no trouble to the home side who, despite the loss of Ryan Sylvester for 0, won in ten overs thanks to skipper Jamie Sylvester 21 not out and Lloyd Smith 37 not out.
