THE real success of Shrek, the film based on William Steig's characters, was in its ability to mix seamlessly the old with the new.
Though set in medieval times it was also upbeat and modern, making it completely relevant to today's audiences. Shrek 2 follows in much the same vein, with lots more clever references to many 20th and 21st century events and subjects. Everything from The Lord of the Rings and fast food to Justin Timberlake and Tom Cruise get a look in. There are five exciting major new characters this time and a real Hollywood feel to it, with stretch-carriages and even a hillside sign for a place called Far Far Away. 3-D animation has advanced in the last couple of years giving this a more realistic look than its predecessor.
The film has more of an earthy quality, with less of a fairytale feel to it. There is so much to take in with double meanings and innuendos a second viewing is almost essential.
