All-action sports weekend attracts the stars

BARRY was the place to be at the weekend with an all-star charity soccer clash at Jenner Park and international volleyball at Whitmore Bay both on offer to sun-kissed locals.

The British Beach Volleyball Grand Prix began on Saturday.

Sponsored by the Vale of Glamorgan council, and the brainchild of Plaid Cymru's Steffan William, it is hoped that the tournament will help secure the world championships next year.

A delighted Cllr William said after the event: "The interest shown by the media and public was overwhelming.

I am more confident than ever that we can bring the championships here."

Council leader, Jeffrey James, added: "Such an event would raise the profile of the resort, provide a major boost for the economy of the whole region and attract competitors and spectators from all over the world."

At Jenner Park a host of celebrities braved the sweltering heat to take part in a clash between Wales and England.

Wales were captained by world boxing champ Joe Calzaghe, with former Welsh internationals David Giles, Mickey Thomas and Stereophonics' drummer Stuart Cable joining forces to face the Auld enemy.

In the England team were former England and Man United player Ray Wilkins, Barry Town manager Kenny Brown, West Ham hero Billy Bonds and ex-Liverpool and England international defender Phil Neale.

Speaking before the game Stuart Cable said: "We as a band are always happy to help out with such a good cause if we have the time.

"But I think we are going to be on the losing side today."

He was right. The final score was 3 - 2 to England - but at least the man of the match was Welsh - that distinction went to Mickey Thomas.

The overall winners of the volleyball were Aaron Stolberg and Joe Mildred in the men's competition, Audrey Cooper and Maria Bertelli in the women's.
