50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of September 17 1953:

The winners of the Cadoxton Gardeners' Association annual potato competition are as follows First: I F Pearce (13lb 4ozs); Second: W Frayling (11lb 8ozs); Third: W Wakeham (10lb 10ozs); Fourth: P Bond (9lb 7ozs); Fifth: S Lyndon (8lb 15ozs).

County councillor Dr William Hughes spoke to the boys of Cadoxton Secondary School last Wednesday on "The Flight of the Welsh Football Team to France and Yugoslavia," giving them an excellent account of the football matches concerned.

The Mayor of Barry's Television Fund for Hospitals now totals £456 1s 1d. The latest donation of £3 3s is from the Fryatt Street Coronation Celebrations Committee.

Supt Samuel Davies, who has been in charge of the Barry Dock Divisions of the Glamorgan Police for the past ten years, retires on Saturday September 26.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of September 21 1978:

Mr Ken Thomas Head Postmaster of the Cardiff district, pinned the Imperial Service Medal on Mr Tom Roberts, who has retired after 43 years service with the Post Office.

Intense heat from 150 tons of blazing hay and straw forced firemen to abandon any hopes of saving a six-bay Dutch barn during a fire at Cwm Ciddy Farm, near Barry, on Tuesday.

Mr Graham Saunders, of Barry has been re-appointed as a member of the Milk Marketing Board for a further three years.
