50 YEARS AGO EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of June 17, 1954:

Edmund Beeching Howard, 65-years-old rigger of Burlington Street, has been invited to Elstree Pictures Ltd, to take part in the film Moby Dick a film dramatisation of Herbert Melville's book.

At the final meeting of the session of the Barry Island Presbyterian Sisterhood, a presentation of a brooch was made to one of its oldest and most faithful members, Anne Taylor.

Mr Pegler, treasurer of the OAP No 5 Branch, was presented at a branch meeting on Monday with a travelling clock and flask. Mr Pegler is retiring after holding the post as treasurer for over five years.

At the Glamorgan Rifle Association meeting at Newton, Porthcawl over the Whit weekend W Herridge of College Road, Barry, one of the crack shots of the Barry Rifle Club, won the "Radcliffe" Cup for an aggregate score of 356.

25 YEARS AGO EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of June 21, 1979:

A Barry woman, Grace Ellis, 88, who emigrated to Canada 53 years ago has just returned to her home town for her fifth visit despite the great handicap of being deaf.

There has been a "big drop" in the number of police calls to Barry Island compared to the same period last year, a solicitor told licensing magistrates in Barry on Tuesday.

lThe proposed cuts in the Vale's ambulance service, announced last week by the South Glamorgan Health Auth-ority, have stirred an angry wave of reaction in Barry.

Two local men were made Officers of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen's Birthday Honours List, announced last week. They were Norman Fishbrook, chief accountant, Department of Industry, from Dinas Powis, and Thomas Francis Guest station manager at Aberthaw Power Station.
