CD review: Keane Hopes and Fears

KEANE'S album 'Hopes and Fears' might possibly not be the best CD to get for the coming summer months. It's not quite the preferred up-beat, finger-clicking sound to get you moving.

Saying that, nothing should be taken away from this young band, who have bravely turned away from the accepted sound of guitars and have dared to use a melancholy piano style.

Unfortunately for Keane, having been discovered by indie label Fearce Panda, and thanks to their incredibly similar style of music, they are being compared massively to the well-established Coldplay from the same label, along with Travis and some Radiohead undertones thrown in for good measure.

They have already released two tracks from the selection of 12 on Hopes and Fears. Somewhere Only We Know and Everybody's Changing helped launch their name on the popular scene, and they are most definitely the kind of band to pack out music festivals.

But whether they have anything different to offer from rivals like Coldplay, only time will tell.

As a debut album this is a darned good start. But with only one or two exceptions, it's more your chilly winter listening than your sunglasses groove
