50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of June 3, 1954:

What appeared to be an explosion midway through Sunday morning caused some alarm - and something of a mystery. No reports were received of any local explosion by the police or fire brigade, while the Nells Point Battery denied there had been firing of a heavy gun.

The annual meeting of the Barry Free Church Federal Council was held on Friday last at Holton Road Methodist Church Parlour, under the presidency of E J Llewellin.

Subsidence of a bank along Merthyr Dyfan Lane has exposed electricity cables, and caused accidents, Ald F G Adams told members of the Public Works and Planning Committee on Monday.

J Felix and T L Andrews, both of the Central Club, Barry, have been selected to play in the Welsh bowls international trial match to be played on June 19.

25 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of June 7, 1979:

The controversial development off Westward Rise, Barry, has been referred to the Local Government Commissioner (the Ombudsman) on behalf of the local residents' action committee.

The Barry based builders suppliers and home improvement firm, Pauls Federated Merchants Ltd are to close their loss-making Barry and Newport branches and have sold their two other branches in Bridgend and Swansea.

At a meeting of the previous Vale Council, the former Mayor Cllr Gwyn Thomas, made a presentation to a former councillor, Cllr John Wells who recently completed 25 years service with the lifeboat.

The Town Mayor Cllr Allan Maidment carried out one of his last commitments as Mayor when he attended an evening of "Music for You" at Bindles recently.
