Rebecca joins the elite

BARRY tennis ace Rebecca Llewellyn has been singled out to join the Sports Council for Wales' Elite Cymru programme.

In 2003, she clocked up a number of wins on the Hasting Direct Tour, in Swansea, Cardiff and Nottingham tournaments.

She is also doing well on the Futures Tour, which has a prize purse of $10,000.

She reached the last 16 of the 2003 Felixstowe event, which helped her move up the world rankings.

The Sports Council for Wales has unveiled its latest intake of talented sports stars.

Seven new recruits are joining the National Lottery-funded Elite Cymru programme and follow in the footsteps of Tanni Grey- Thompson, Nicole Cooke and Jamie Baulch.

Four of the seven new members are targeting berths in Athens this summer.

In addition to Lottery funding to help with training and competition costs, the Elite Cymru package also provides sports science support to ensure training is monitored, improved and redesigned as required, plus career and education guidance to help athletes deal with the demands made upon them outside the competitive arena and a range of personal development courses such as media training, nutrition and goal-setting.

The programme also offers free access to top-class training facilities such as the Welsh Institute of Sport, Cardiff, and medical support to ensure immediate access to treatment.
