Wales looking to retain World Cup

AS Wales gears up to host the Deaf Rugby World Cup in August next year, two international players from the Vale of Glamorgan are helping create a clear pathway into the sport for local players.

The Welsh Deaf Rugby Union is seeking to put in place a development structure aimed at attracting new talent among the hearing impaired, and leading the way in the Vale are Ben Pritchard and Matthew Campbell.

The two Vale players currently represent Wales, who won the inaugural World Cup in 2002 after beating hosts and favourites New Zealand 28-14 in the final at Eden Park.

The new moves are part of a strategy aiming to help Wales retain the trophy, and plans include the creation of training programmes for 11 to 16-year-olds and for those aged 16 and over.

Ben and Matthew have been involved in rugby from childhood, being members of their local rugby club, and are inviting anyone with a hearing impairment, and an enthusiasm and talent for rugby, to get in touch.

To be eligible to represent the Welsh squad, a minimum of an average 25 decibels hearing loss in both ears is required. Ben said: "It is surprising how many people do not realise they reach the eligibility criteria."

In addition to attracting present rugby players to become involved with the WDRU, there may also be opportunities for some hearing impaired athletes from other disciplines to become involved in the sport.

Ben added: "As with any sport, in order to continue with their development, the WDRU are looking for volunteers to assist with their programmes. There are numerous roles that can be undertaken by volunteers including assisting with training, offering support during sessions or becoming involved in fundraising and securing sponsorship."

Further information on becoming involved in deaf rugby or forthcoming fixtures can be obtained from Geraint John on 07952 088894 or on the WDRU website at www.wdru.com.
