Renewed calls for safety measure

A BARRY campaigner is repeating his call for urgent action to improve the safety of motorists at a notorious blackspot after a series of terrible accidents.

The lastest crash saw two ambulances and a rapid response vehicle attending two vehicles that collided at the junction of Coldbrook Road and Barry Dock Link Road on Tuesday, May 18.

Two people were rushed to Cardiff's University of Wales Hospital.

Ceri Rowlands, 60, of Coldbrook Road, started a campaign in the News for a review of the layout of the road system when the dangerous junction claimed the life of Dinas Powys dad Ian Bull in January.

Mr Rowlands said: "Over the years there have been so many terrible accidents at that junction. The worst was when three teachers were killed on their way to St Gwyn School in the 1980s."

"Cars joining the Link Road from Coldbrook Road are completely unprotected.

The layout of the junction forces cars joining the Link Road to a complete stop. They then have to accelerate like mad to join the traffic or take silly risks to cut across it.

"At the same time you have cars hammering down the road not sticking to the 60mph speed limit.

"If there was a roundabout there, like the one at Lidl, cars would be forced to slow down and it would make access from Coldbrook Road much smoother."

Motorcyclist Ian Bull died in January and David Ivins, 24, of Barry Road, was sentenced to two years imprisonment earlier this month after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.

A spokesman for the Vale of Glamorgan Council's Highways department said: "We have recently commissioned a consultant to investigate this location and to report back by early July.

"The investigation will consider the accident history of the site, the existing traffic flows and junction layout and will provide possible options for improving the existing situation."
