Tan safely by choosing the right protection for you

IF you think that a sun-bronzed body looks the picture of health, think again -because there is no such thing as a safe tan.

That is the summer healthcare message from the National Pharmaceutical Association, the organisation that represents the nation's community pharmacists.

Each year there are more than 44,000 new cases of skin cancer diagnosed, and over 2,000 deaths. Many of these cases are caused by over-exposure to the sun. So, before you decide to strip down to your bikini or shorts, remember skin cancer is the second most common cancer in the UK and that cases are on the increase.

This summer, regardless of your skin colour, if you are going to be out in the sun, even for a short time, apply a sunscreen to all skin that will be exposed. Besides protecting you from sunburn, sunscreens help to prevent other problems related to sun exposure, such as ageing and skin cancer.

Sunscreens are available from your local pharmacy in a variety of forms - creams, milks, lotions, gels and sprays - so there are plenty of different products to choose from.

But regardless of what type of sunscreen you choose, be sure that it blocks UVA and UVB rays - both of which are damaging to the skin - and that it has an SPF of 15 or above. It is important to apply the sunscreen regularly, as this will help you to keep safe from burning.

Get a tan the safe way - don't be a fool in the sun.
