Get ahead of the game when it comes to hair care

GLORIOUSLY healthy shining locks and tresses are guaranteed to make heads turn.

And this summer, whether you are going on holiday or not, you will want to make sure your hair really is your crowning glory.

Sun is just one of a number of enemies that healthy hair encounters during the course of its everyday life. Stress and poor diet are the main causes of dull, lifeless hair, but a balanced diet is not always that easy to achieve.

Factors such as going without breakfast or lunch or otherwise not eating properly makes a difference. A hormone produced by stress can lead to hair thinning and loss.

The sun can play havoc with hair so it is wise to get a head start with a few handy tips.

On holiday always protect your hair from the sun and keep it covered where possible. Shampoo out any chlorine that may be in the hair after you have been swimming.

Mousey hair will be lifted by the sun, so it is important to ensure it is in tip-top condition before jetting off. Tone down the ends for an even look and apply hair gloss to bring out the natural tones.

Dark brown hair looks gorgeous when it has been highlighted and a colour wash rinsed through. Blondes have the nicest colours at the ends of the hair where a natural lighter look has been created by the elements.

Hair's natural colour has many tones which can be enhanced by a subtle change of colour. But if you decide on highlighting make sure you steer clear of colours which don't match.

Mix a small amount of wax with a spray gel for a slightly stronger shine. Gloss will help protect the hair from sun and help against colour fading.

Washing hair every day is all right so long as you use a mild shampoo, such as one with a pH factor of between 4.5 and 5.5.

If you have decided to grow your hair it is best to visit your hairdresser every six weeks to make sure it doesn't suffer from split ends.

Hair that has been highlighted for a number of years may become brittle at the ends. If your hair is in bad condition speak to your hairdresser who may recommend cutting a little off the ends to get rid of any dead hair and a home re-conditioning treatment.

Always buy good value-for-money products including shampoo, conditioner, treatments, styling aides and hair-holding spray.

You should visit your hairdresser every six weeks in any case to make sure your hair doesn't suffer from split ends.
