Shank's pony is the best way to see the countryside

The best way to discover the beautiful Vale of Glamorgan is to follow one of the country lanes criss-crossing rolling green hills and wooded valleys. It won't be long before you come across one of the many pretty towns and villages where you can be sure to find a traditional country pub to stop for a drink and a bite to eat!

Cowbridge

In the heart of the Vale countryside is the market town of Cowbridge. Its busy main street is lined with chic boutiques, delightful pubs, wine bars and restaurants. The town has a wealth of historic buildings and a prosperous unhurried feel to it. The work of local artists can also be viewed in this charming country town.

Llantwit Major

The town of Llantwit Major, close to the heritage coast, is steeped in Welsh history. Almost every period has left its mark on Llantwit Major - Iron Age hill forts, a Roman villa, Celtic crosses, a medieval grange and fine Tudor buildings. The town still retains an air of antiquity with its maze of narrow streets, old-world shops, quaint stone cottages and old country inns. Many will prefer to explore the area on foot and the Vale countryside provides ample opportunity to do this.

Choose from one of the many circular walks, varying in length, or take a week long walking holiday along the Millennium Heritage Trail. This 72 mile walk meanders around the Vale's country footpaths linking towns, villages and hamlets.
