Playgroup takes steps to survive

A BARRY playgroup that was saved from closure a year ago is now going from strength to strength.

The First Steps playgroup, based at Buttrills Community Centre, looked set to fold after Colcot Community project with-drew from the scheme last July.

Without the project's support the playgroup had no registered status and no funding.

But Deborah Curry, of York Place, decided to take up the challenge of reviving the playgroup and hasn't looked back.

Deborah said: "It has been a hard slog to keep this going but I now feel as though we are getting somewhere. I think £3 is extremely good value for two-and-a-half hours and all the children get milk and biscuits.

"It would have been a terrible shame for the community if we had lost this playgroup. We are building up our numbers, but still have spare capacity.

"Anyone who is in need of childcare in the mornings should either pop in and see me at the community centre or give me a call to make arrangements.

"I provide this service on a voluntary basis and we are non-profit making. We are planning a number of fundraising events over the coming months to help improve our facilities and make the service even better.

"I would encourage the whole community to get behind us and give us their support."

The playgroup is now fully registered and takes children from two years of age. Nappy changing and potty training are provided to help parents along.

The playgroup has a wide range of play equipment, a slide, bikes and a home corner with a cooker and washing machine.

It has four qualified staff who are all working to upgrade their qualifications.

The playgroup is open from 9.15am to 11.45am each weekday morning. The charge is £3 per morning. For further information contact Deborah Curry on 01446 407878.
