I read the small story in the story in last week's Barry & District News about the free dog poop bags, and felt I had to write and commend the Vale of Glamorgan Council on their efforts.
For all the criticism a local authority comes under, there are few times when people bother to put pen to paper and say 'well done'.
Their recycling campaign and their efforts to make sure people clean up after their pets cannot be faulted.
Now we have to make sure the townsfolk listen to the message.
Those of us who have been recycling for years have often been scoffed at for being naive, that the lengths we have gone to won't make any difference in the long run.
But I, and many others like me, disagree. And even the EU has joined in our battle to minimise the damage we do to our planet.
I don't want to preach and this isn't the right forum to do it anyway. But it's responsible behaviour to wash out a couple of glass bottles, take the labels off and post them through a big bank. It doesn't take long, but if everyone did it, then the impact would be incredible.
As far as cleaning the streets of dog mess is concerned, the Vale council is doing its best to improve the situation. Isn't it now down to us to make sure we keep the ball rolling and owners shoulder their responsibility?
And while I appreciate the difficulty, I think horse owners should go behind themselves with a bucket and shovel. While dogs are more common, horses have the quantity.
But in conclusion, I will recap and say once again to the Vale council - well done. I think you're all doing a grand job!
Mr N Jones
