Disappointing opening match for Wanderers

BARRY Wanderers Cricket Club started their VGML campaign last week with a disappointing result against Tynewydd.

Ed Sherriff and Paul George opened the innings and stayed together until the penultimate over - George with a fluent 49, and Sherriff with a classy 59.

The final total from their 20 overs was 133/2, a great effort. McInery was pick of the bowlers with 1-15.

The Tyny reply saw Richie Rogers and Gary Morgan guide the score to 102 before Morgan fell for a superb 52 and they ran out winners by seven wickets.

On Saturday BWCC firsts entertained Brynmawr at Sully Hospital for their second league fixture of the season. With acting skipper Barnes winning the toss and electing to bat, the promoted Joel Cross and Sooty Coleman were both back in the pavilion with 11 on the board. Johnson and George (15) put on 46 for the third wicket, and with some lusty blows from Srini Venkat (34) and Andy Fenton (22) the score reached 197 all out, the classy Johnson finishing on 82.

With Fenton struggling for his length (13 off the first over) it was left to Beckett to stem the flow of runs, and he picked up 2-31 in the process. Some accurate stuff from Venkat, plus three wickets off four balls, saw Brynmawr fall 24 runs short.

The Seconds played at Brynmawr and had a great, but slow-scoring game.

With a late surge by Ashton and Gist, the Wanderers finished on 97 for 8 .

Brynmawr found it just as hard-going and were 11/2 after 13 overs. With some good catches being held and some great bowling from Mansfield (3 for 23) and especially from Morgan (5 for 20) Brynmawr subsided to 66 all out.

On Sunday skipper Coleman took his troops up to the Cynon Valley, and could muster only ten men.

Brian Gist and Smith put on 62 for the second wicket, a great effort. Smith went for 42 and Gist ended up scoring a patient, but vital 37. The score ended on 129 off their 40 overs.

A steady flow of wickets followed, with all of the bowlers chipping in. CV were in deep trouble at 109 for 8 but the last wicket pairing of Hames and Harman saw them home off the penultimate ball.
