A BARRY man is celebrating after being chosen to carry the Olympic flame on June 26 as part of the 2004 Olympic Torch Relay.
James Savory, 21, of Court Road, was selected for his involvement in the Great Britain Special Olympics.
He is one of 145 "extraordinary ordinary" people chosen to run 400 metres with the torch through the streets of London - the first time the flame has passed through the city since Great Britain hosted the Games in 1948.
James is a very good all-round sportsman who plays water-polo, basketball, football, badminton, and boccia.
He also swims, skis, and does athletics and gymnastics.
James has represented his school, college and country over the years in a variety of sports.
His best achievement was in gymnastics at which he represented Great Britain at the World Games in Dublin where he won two gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
The relay will be a truly global event travelling across six continents arriving in London from Paris before making its way towards Athens for the Olympic Games Ceremony on August 13.
Joining the "extraordinary ordinary" people on the flame's route, which begins on Centre Court, Wimbledon, will be sporting personalities Sir Roger Bannister, Sir Steve Redgrave, Frank Bruno, Ian Botham, Dr Stephanie Cook, Kris Akabusi, Tim Henman, Sharron Davies, Michael Watson and Chris Boardman.
The 48km route has yet to be specified, but community events to celebrate the flame are planned along the route, before the final torchbearer lights an Olympic cauldron, prior to a concert, in The Mall.
Other people selected include Laura Bateman, from Coventry, who, despite being born with congenital hip problems, is a dedicated gymnast and Disabilities International champion; and Anthony McDonald Liggins, who requires a daily combination of drugs to keep him alive following a brain tumour 15 years ago, and has run 35 marathons, all in fancy dress, to raise money for charity.
