Fighting their way to success

A BARRY martial arts team swept the board at a prestigious international

Jason Griffiths and his students from the WCKA Karate Team travelled to Corfu on May 5 to take part in the WPKA World Kickboxing Championships.

Nine-year-old Lloyd Deere scooped a gold medal in the semi contact under-25kg category, and a bronze medal in light continous contact under-25kg. Jamie Viscount, also nine, won gold in the semi contact under-30kg category. Jonathan Viscount, 11, bagged a bronze in the semi contact under-35kg and Joshua Griffiths, 10, came away with silver in semi contact under-35kg.

Following the successes of all his students Jason also won bronze medals in both semi contact and light continuous.

The atmosphere was electric, with every team representing Britain cheering each other on. Out of the 56 countries competing, represented by more than 1,500 fighters, Britain brought home 29 gold medals, 17 silver and 22 bronze.

Jason and his students are now looking for sponsors to help them buy a minibus, so they can continue to carry on their triumphs by taking part in competitions all over the country.

If anyone would like to help, or would like to join the WCKA, either go along to Barry Leisure Centre on Tuesdays from 7pm to 8pm or Holm View Leisure Centre from 6pm to 8pm on Fridays or contact Jason on 07815 066717 or 01446 720988.
