DESPITE a spirited display Barry RFC were unable to continue their winning run when they lost at Nantymoel 24-11. This Wednesday evening match was always going to be a difficult fixture for the Barry players with Nantymoel, lying second in the table and only needing a win to ensure their promotion into Division Two.
A rush from work, a delayed kick-off, a wet and slippery pitch plus heavy rain were not ideal conditions for the Barry players who soon realised why the hosts have been vying with Treherbert for the top spot of the division. From the kick-off the Nantymoel three-quarters showed amazing handling as they defied the appalling conditions to score two quick tries and take an early 14-point lead. Barry managed a penalty goal by Chris Cummings before conceding a third try for a 19-3 deficit.
However, Barry showed great spirit and with the pack to the fore took the game to the opposition and, following a lineout, number eight, Jason Evans, was driven over for a corner try. With Barry now dominating the forward exchanges play remained in the home side's half and, just before the break, Cummings kicked his second penalty goal for a half-time score of 19-11 in the host's favour.
The second half opened minus the rain and Barry continuing to attack. However, after weathering these attacks, Nanty established a foothold in the Barry 22 from where they were able to pin the Barry pack in the muddy, slippery right-hand corner. After a series of five metre scrums the Barry eight finally succumbed, allowing Nantymoel to score a pushover try for a 24-11 point lead. Although Barry never gave up, and for the last quarter probably held territorial advantage they were unable to breakdown an excellent Nanty defence which held out for a well-deserved victory and guaranteed promotion for the team.
Next Saturday the Barry XV conclude their fixtures for the season when they entertain Rhydyfelin at the Reservoir Field. KO 2.30pm.
Members and supporters are reminded that the club's Annual Presentation Dinner Dance is on May 28, with tickets and table bookings available from Andy Jamieson on Barry 411737.
