CD review

THE YOUNG artist who soared on to the music scene with the words I'm Like a Bird has shown that she is not likely to just fly away.

Nelly Furtado has just released her second album Folklore, a colourful fusion of pop and acoustic, with a few cultural influences thrown in for good measure.

There are 12 tracks on the CD, and a limited edition of the Powerless video and access to a website. She also includes an acoustic version of the single Try, which works beautifully without any unnecessary enhancements.

Furtado aims for a rock sound without losing her roots.

Her voice and tunes are strong, and both words and music paint a picture of a young woman still very much in flux.

Nelly seems to have added music to her thoughts on contemporary culture and its clashes.

Folklore showcases a more mature collection of songs which see Furtado dipping into her Portuguese for inspiration.

She has already released Powerless attacking the media's inclination to misrepresent. She sings with passion and the banjo accompaniment gives it the push it needed to make it a strong single.

This album a welcome return of Nelly Furtado, a heartfelt collection of songs each bringing something different.
