50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of April 29, 1954:

At the annual meeting of the Barry Chamber of Trade and Commerce, at the Barry YMCA on Tuesday evening, John C Dunscombe was installed as president for the year.

Warm applause greeted Raymond Gower, Conservative MP for Barry, at the close of a 45 minute address to delegates of the Barry Trades Union Council at the Bassett Hotel.

David Richards, the Barry athlete, played a prominent part in the successes gained by the University College of London in the Channel Islands against two of the island's clubs.

Two local men serving in the RAF, Sgt F B Wilkinson of St Mary's Avenue, and Cpl R G Vaughan of Starling Road, St Athan, were among the first to greet the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh when they arrived for a short visit to Aden on Tuesday.

25 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of May 3, 1979:

The demolition of buildings to the rear of the Tower Discount Store in Palmerston Road, Barry, will hopefully, prevent any further expansion of the store and resolve a and along running situation.

With doorstep canvassing completed and all parties poised for what promises to be a hectic day of activity, an estimated electorate of 49,260 in Barry and district will cast votes in today's parliamentary and local government elections.

Six-year-old Donna Griffiths, of Clive Road, Barry, has cause to remember a recent holiday at Pontins, Brean Sands. She captivated the judges and was crowned "Princess of the Week".
