Anger over flag thefts at ground

A SULLY cricket club is calling for CCTV to be installed at its ground after a spate of vandalism.

The Centurions, who play near Burnham Avenue, were the victims of a theft on Sunday, April 25, which saw them lose two flags worth £500. Both are of sentimental value - one is to commemorate their league championship, the other was their logo and crest.

David Sylvester, who has been chairman of the club for 20 years, said: "I have seen the problem of damage to the area get steadily worse over the years. We have had windows broken and other problems we believe is caused by youths.

"I think it would be a very good idea to put CCTV in and around the area. This would mean the police could identify the culprits and catch them. I myself have told youths off before now."

MR Sylvester, who believes the flags were stolen between 8pm on the Saturday and 7am Sunday April 25 said the club is also counting the cost.

He added: "We can't afford to keep paying for damage. If the flags are not found we will have to pay for new ones. We would be grateful for any help offered."

He admitted the flags were unfortunately left out by mistake and this gave the thieves the opportunity to strike.

Inspector Huw Smart of Penarth Police station said: "I have sent a community officer to investigate the matter. But so far we have no leads to go on. But I am aware there is a problem with youth annoyance in the Sully area and that is an issue I want to tackle. This does not automatically mean this is the cause."

But Mr Sylvester said: "This is just another act of pointless vandalism. I have never known vandalism like this. This incident is just one of many."

Sully Community Council has been trying to find a solution to the youth annoyance and have even entered in to dialogue with youths.
