50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of April 22, 1954:

l E T Griffiths, former headmaster of Barry County Grammar School, has returned to South Wales from Australia for a six months' holiday.

l R M Church, Rhiwbina, honorary secretary of the Barry Division Liberal Association, is representing the South Wales Women's Liberal Federation at the Liberal Assembly in Buxton this week.

l Leading-seaman Ken Stephens, aged 21, son of Mrs Brannigan, of Travis Street, Barry Dock, has been selected to represent his unit during the Navy Week Exhibition which opens at Earls Court, London on June 2.

l David Rollings, of Caradoc Avenue, a young Barry Author, acted in one of the principal parts in his new play China Egg performed by the Universal Guild Players at Bouchier Hall, Cardiff Institute for the Blind.

l Hereford became one of the few teams to complete the "double" over Barry when they again triumphed by the odd goal in a hard-fought game at Hereford on Easter Monday.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of April 26, 1979:

l At a presentation held in the historic Armourers' Hall, London, recently, 52 safety men were awarded the Diploma in Safety Management - the highest professional safety qualification in the world. They included Mr Alan M Jones, of Dow Corning (Barry).

l On Easter Saturday, Roger Llewellyn, former manager of Cosmeston Quarry now the site of Cosmeston Country Park, handed over to the chairman of the Cosmeston Country Park Joint Committee, County Cllr Mrs Margaret Box photographs and documents relating to the quarry.

l With polling day only a week away, election fever has gripped Barry and canvassers for all five parties in the race for Parliamentary and local government seats predict a massive turnout of the local electorate on May 3.

l On March 30, there were 243 unfilled vacancies at the Barry Jobcentre and Llantwit Major Employment Office.
