BARRY 17 YNYSYBWL 12
ON A chilly Saturday afternoon Barry found themselves kicking off up the slope and into a blustery wind. The Barry pack, with two experienced props, Stuart Hunt and Ian Peter returning to the side, put the visitors' scrum under early pressure but Chris Cummings missed a penalty. After weathering the early onslaught 'Bwl employed the truck and trailer approach to drive the Barry pack back and scrum half Williams crossed for an unconverted try. Despite breaks by centre Andrew Griffiths and outside half Rhidian Scott, which caused 'Bwl some problems, Barry spent the rest of the half successfully denying the visitors any further scores. Barry began the second half playing with the elements and only five points behind, so a rare victory seemed a distinct possibility. When Dominic Busittil was stopped near the corner, he flicked an inside pass for Andrew Griffiths to cross, and Cummings converted for a 7-5 lead. Ynysybwl regained the lead when outside half Pritchard crossed for a converted try. Barry immediately responded and Grantley Harris put left winger Dave Provis away for a try which Cummings converted. The fullback capped a fine game by adding a penalty to give his side a well deserved 17-12 victory. This determined display gained revenge for the heavy defeat inflicted by Ynysybwl in December's away fixture. All players deserve praise, especially Jimmy Lye who came out of retirement to help out as a prop replacement despite playing most of his rugby in the back row. Not only did he produce an awesome display when he took the field for the second half, but he was also the lucky winner of the club's Mediterranean cruise raffle , which was held on Saturday evening. With Barry and Tylorstown both winning their games and with Taffs Well and Pentyrch losing theirs the relegation issue has been blown wide open. The current standings at the bottom are: P W D L Pts 10. Tylorstown 20 6 1 13 19 11. Pentyrch 20 6 0 14 18 12. Taffs Well 21 5 0 16 15 13. Barry 20 4 1 15 13
Barry's remaining games are: Saturday, April 24, Rhydfelin, away, kick-off 2.30pm (coach leaves the club at 12.30pm) Saturday, May 1, Nelson, home, kick-off 2.30pm. Wednesday, May 5, Nantymoel, away, kick-off 6.30pm. Saturday, May 15, Rhydfelin, home, kick-off 2.30pm.
