EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of April 15, 1954:

Wren Valeria Thomas, 23-year-old twin daughter of Mr and Mrs L R Thomas, of Evelyn Street, Barry, has been chosen from the Wrens at Plymouth to attend the Navy Week Exhibition, which opens at Earls Court, London, on June 2.

Twenty-five Corporation drivers were presented with safe-driving awards by the Mayor of Barry (Ald Tom Yeoman) at the Town Hall on Tuesday week.

Cllr H Lawrence G Davies, who, as an Independent, has represented the High Street Ward for the past three years on the Barry Council, has intimated that he will not be standing for re-election at the May elections.

Salem Baptist Church, Beryl Road, Barry, was crowded on Wednesday afternoon for the induction of a new pastor, the Rev W Oswald Williams.

Following a recent grant from the Vale of Glamorgan Borough Council, the Vale of Glamorgan Band has taken possession of new instruments to the value of £1,700.

Fantastic was the way in which one Barry Island trader described the Easter weekend when the unexpected sunshine brought the day trippers out in their thousands.

Sixth form pupils from Bryn Hafren Girls' School and Barry Boys' Comprehensive School met on Thursday in a rugby match for charity.

This year's Buttrills Carnival Queen is 14-year-old Annette Johns of St Fagan's Avenue Barry.
