Class Act

RECENTLY my wife and I had the privilege of attending an awards ceremony at the University of Glamorgan, Pontypridd. Each year the University in conjunction with the Royal Institution of Great Britain organises a series of Mathematics Masterclasses for young people (aged 13/14).

Pupils are selected from schools across mid and south-east Glamorgan. They are then invited to attend the full series of Masterclasses at the university campus for seven consecutive Saturday mornings (each session two-and-a-half to three hours).

This culminates on the eighth Saturday with an awards ceremony where the pupils were presented with their certificates of achievement by Jane Davidson AM. As Mrs Davidson stated these pupils were not selected because they were "just good" at maths but because they were "extremely" good.

From Barry, this year, there was a young man from Sir Richard Gwyn School and three young ladies from Bryn Hafren - Sophie Harries, Bethan McKernan and Carys Thomas.

The girls were a real credit to the school and its staff, so well done girls and well done Bryn Hafren.
