DVD review 'Once upon a time in Mexico'

Once Upon A Time In Mexico is not the kind of movie you can keep just half an eye on. It needs your full concentration.

And starring Antonio Banderas as El Mariachi, while boasting other big names like Salma Hayek, (Carolina), Enrique Iglesias (Lorenzo), Johnny Depp, (Sands) and Willem Dafoe as Barillo, it is worth the effort.

This is the sequel to Robert Rodriguez's film Desperado, and El Mariachi is in hiding after spending the majority of his adult life killing people.

Through flashbacks, the audience figures out that he and his wife Carolina, had settled down and borne a daughter.

The main thrust of the plot is fairly simple. Barillo, the leader of one of the biggest crime cartels in Mexico, is planning to overthrow the Government. The CIA knows this, and wants to let it happen, but is not willing to let Barillo come to power.

At this point, it's difficult to work out who is double-crossing whom, but give it some time and all should become clear. Maybe. Not a bad film - but not your typical escapism either.
