Stop litter louts ruining the town

A BARRY estate's flytipping problem has prompted calls for a campaign to catch culprits in the act.

Residents at the Colcot are demanding the Vale of Glamorgan Council act quickly to halt the growing epidemic.

They are also furious that just days after they cleaned up the area, the flytippers returned and dumped more rubbish.

Monmouth Way resident Kalpana Bikram told the News: "We spent the whole of a Sunday morning just cleaning the green at Burns Crescent and Tennyson Road. Yet we have only scratched the surface.

"More annoying was that within two days the flytippers struck again."

She is now calling for the local authority to use mobile CCTV cameras to catch and prosecute the mess-makers.

Her views are echoed by Vale of Glamorgan councillor Rob Curtis who said: "It's about time these litter louts are called to account for making our town a mess.

"I call on the Vale of Glamorgan Council to make use of its powers and take positive action by prosecuting those few people who do not care what their environment looks like.

"We must educate people but then also be prepared to prosecute these litter louts.

"Only by naming and shaming will these anti-social people stop, but they just laugh and carry on dumping litter.

"It is time we got tough and started prosecuting."

The council has highlighting the many initiatives in place to tackle the problem.

A council spokesman said: "The council continues to put considerable resources into collecting litter and trying to prevent flytipping.

"Measures such as the free special collection service for bulky items, introduced last year, have contributed to improvements."

He added the council welcomed help from the public in helping to crack down on illegal fly tipping. Call 029 2067 3000 with information.
