50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of March 25, 1954:

The children's dancing troupe, trained by Miss Terry Small, made a big hit at the Barry Island YPA's pantomime given on four nights last week.

The 1st Barry Scouts held their annual pantomime at Porthkerry Road Methodist Schoolroom on four nights last week. This year they chose Dick Turpin.

For some obscure reason the Barry Council's decision to increase the rents of Council houses to bring in a further £18,888 to meet the deficit on the housing account was reached at a private meeting.

Lord Lloyd, Under-Secretary at the Home Office with special duties for Welsh Affairs is to visit Barry and Cardiff on March 29, as the guest of John Bailey, director of C H Bailey Ltd.

The Trinity House tender Patricia, which will lead the nautical escort up the Thames and be ahead of the Royal yacht Britannia, was overhauled in the dry dock of the Barry Graving Dock.

The Chairman of the Barry Liberal Association, Jim Greaves, of Somerset Road West, Barry had been selected as the Liberal candidate for the South Wales constituency in the forthcoming European Parliament elections.

An account of the work of the National Children's Homes was given to members of the Cadoxton WRVS Darby and Joan Club on Tuesday week.

Flight Lieutenant Martin Stoner, aged 31, from Barry, a member of the Red Arrows, is preparing for his third season with the team at their based in Gloucestershire, RAF Kemble.

At the annual general meeting of the Barry Committee for Cancer Research, the chairman, Mr R A Gibbons, paid tribute to the members for their efforts during the past year and to the townspeople of Barry for their generous support.

Amanda Blythe, of Porth-y-Castell, Barry, following trials held at Pembroke, has been selected for the Welsh Schoolgirls' hockey team to play Scotland in Ayr this Saturday.
