IN the Barry and District News on March 11, Illtyd Tory councillor, Tony Hampton, accused me of playing politics with children's lives.
This was when I complained about his failure to deliver a safe crossing place for children on Severn Avenue, despite his party being in control of the local council for five years.
If wanting to make my children's school a safer place, is 'playing politics,' then I am guilty as charged. If wanting to make the ward where I grew up in a better place, and wanting to do something about it by standing for election, then I will come clean and admit it.
I believe that politics is about delivering a better environment, not just vaguely talking about doing something in the future, as Councillor Hampton and his colleagues did in last week's reply.
Though he was very clear about the fact he will be taking the credit for the future building of a crossing, he omits to tell us when it will be built!
I don't think that local children should have to wait another five years, we need one now. At least five accidents on that spot in the last few years should be warning enough.
As a result of my concerns, the Vale Labour group has agreed to make a clear manifesto commitment that if elected, we will build a zebra crossing on Severn Avenue.
