Dominic wins gold in unfavourable lane

BARRY and Vale Harrier Dominic Papura stormed to victory in the 200 metres in Sunday's indoor international match between England, Wales and Ireland held at the University of Wales High Performance Centre in Cardiff.

Barry and Vale Harriers coach John Hartley said: "Because of the disadvantage of lane one, only lanes two, three and four were used for the 200 metres individual event but unfortunately Dominic drew lane two which is also considered a disadvantage. Nevertheless he accepted it without question and decided to run the first 150 metres hard and pressurised the other athletes into playing catch-up."

In the last event of the meeting the senior men's 4 x 200 metres relay Dominic was asked to run the last leg for the team and although given a small lead by the third runner he extended it some ten metres to bring home his team to win.

Calvin Maclaggon was selected to run in the under-20 men's 60-metres held in the late afternoon.

From one of his renowned fast starts he led right up to the last few metres where he was just pipped on the line for first place but with a personal best of 7.01 seconds. Calvin also selected to run in a 4 x 200 metre relay for the under-20 men's relay team on the third leg.

Taking the baton in third position he set off to gain the lead but found that his first two attempts at this were balked by the leading runners who tried to close him out and break up his stride pattern, he finally fought his way through to hand over a lead to the final leg runner who lost it to place the Welsh team second.

Another Vale Harrier Jamie Jones recently won the British AAA under-15 long jump. Jamie's jump of 5.98 metres was a new Welsh National Record.
