50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of March 4, 1954:

At a special meeting of the Welsh Regional Hospital Board, the appointment of Dr J Kotowski, of Stockton-on-Tees, as senior casualty officer at the Barry Accident Hospital, was confirmed.

The first challenger to appear on TV's famous parlour game "What's My Line?" on Sunday evening was William Walters of Barry. Mr Walters, a tug boat fireman for 54 years, beat the panel.

The Barry No 1 Branch OAP held their business meeting on Tuesday Week. Reports were given by delegates P John and W E Griffiths, and the secretary reported on a meeting of the Barry Good Samaritan Association held at the YMCA.

Carol Stella Cumford, aged nine, of Hywel Crescent, Whitchell Estate, Cadoxton, a pupil at Jenner Park Junior Mixed School gained a consolation prize for an essay she entered in this year's St David's Day Essay Competition, organised by the Western Mail.

Ken Cross, of Barry Road, Barry, has been successful in passing the final examination held in December in Cardiff, of the Association of Certified and Corporate Accountants.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of March 8, 1979:

The Baruc and Illtyd Ward Labour Party has written to the brewery, S A Brain and Company, expressing concern about the site of the former Marine Hotel.

The South Glamorgan Fire Service (Barry) extinguished a fire in a horse box parked at the junction of Treharne Road and Holland Way, Cadoxton on Wednesday week.

Quizmaster Alan Roberts was in charge of the proceedings at the Barry Camera Club on Friday when members were given some mental stimulus relating to photography.

On Saturday week the Rotaract Club of Barry held a nearly new shop in Simon's Shop, Holton Road, and raised £71.50 for local charities.
