EMERGENCE: Boccia is growing in popularity in the Vale.
THE EMERGENCE of three new local clubs is testimony to the growing popularity of the sport of boccia in the Vale of Glamorgan. Similar to bowls and originally created for people with cerebral palsy, boccia is now played recreationally and competitively - up to paralypmic level - by both disabled and able-bodied people. It can be played as singles, pairs or triples, and players can throw, roll - using a ramp if needed - or kick the ball. The basic principle is to secure the highest number of points by positioning bowls close to a target ball. The three new clubs cater for individuals of all ages and abilities, from beginner to elite level. The Boccia Blasters is specifically for individuals with cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy or tetraplegia, and training takes place every Saturday from 10-11.30am at Barry Leisure Centre. New members are always very welcome to join in the fun. Future plans for the club are to enter local, regional and national competitions and further information can be obtained from Anne Anderson on 01656 302645. Another new club, Boccia Rollers, is aimed at adults with learning disabilities and meets on a Friday afternoon from 2-3pm at the Barry centre. Supervised by qualified coach Val Savory, participants have the opportunity for selection to the Welsh Special Olympics squad. Further information can be obtained by contacting Val on 07774 720216. Open to adults of all ability levels, Barry Boccia Club is run by leisure centre staff on a Wednesday afternoon from 2-3pm. Further information can be obtained from Barry Leisure reception on 01446 744770. For further information regarding disability sport in the Vale please contact Karen Davies on 01446 704728.
